Blogging is one of those things I wish I had started about 30+ years ago.  Well…not sure there was internet then, but honestly….I sure wish I had taken the time way back then to learn how to start a blog to make money because it’s a great way to supplement your income.  If you’re all set and you don’t need or want to create an online income…it’s also a great way to simply find your “online voice” and write about things that interest you.

Whatever your reason is for wanting to start a blog, I can help you with the “How-To” part here.

There are a few different options for getting a blog started.

Below I’ve outlined several different ways on how to start a blog to make money.

The first is a quick 6 step tutorial on one way to get started with your blog.  I’ll call this the DIY method.  The steps are detailed below, but basically, you’ll be finding and purchasing a hosting package and domain name and then installing the proper blogging software inside your hosting account.   After you’ve got that part done you may want to learn a bit about blogging so you know what to actually do with your blog once it’s set up.  The process is actually pretty simple if you’re somewhat computer savvy.

If the DIY method sounds a bit complicated, you may want to consider the second option below on how to start a blog to make money.  I’ll call this one the 1-stop solution to getting your blog online.  It includes everything you need from the hosting, all the way to training on how to set up your blog and turn it into a profitable business if that’s your intention.  If you prefer this simple but very powerful method you can get all the details plus receive a free blog and free web hosting to get started right here.

Quick Word Of Advice

If you’ve researched blogging at all so far, you’re probably aware that it’s possible to start a free blog with some blogging platforms like Blogger or to name a few.  DO NOT use one of these free services if you have any intention of trying to make a few $$ from your blog at any time in the future.  Why?  Because these platforms are extremely limited in terms of what you can actually do with your blog, you’re technically not allowed to use them for business of any sort, you can’t use a custom domain name and you don’t actually own your own content.  That last reason there….that’s the biggest biggie of them all!  You definitely do not want to give up control of your own content once you create it.

DIY Method – How To Start A Blog To Make Money

1.  Choose your niche.

Your niche is the subject of your blog.  It’s the subject that you’re going to be talking about in your blog.

2.  Choose a platform to blog on.

Check out my Quick Word Of Advice Above!  I talked about this briefly there.  There are some free blogging platforms out there and you definitely do not want to use one of these.  My recommendation is to use WordPress, but make sure you are using a self-hosted WordPress, not as I mentioned above.

3.  Get web-hosting and register a domain name.

You need to get space on the internet to host or hold your blog.  It’s like your blog’s house.  And your domain name is your blog’s address on the internet.  There are lots of options out there for web hosting and domain names.  But all are not created equally.  One of the best companies, in my opinion, is Siteground.  You can check out some very inexpensive hosting plans with Siteground here.  When you’re just starting out with your blog, you’ll be fine with the least expensive plan they offer.

4.  Install WordPress on your new domain.

Since I’m positive that you followed my advice and chose to use self-hosted WordPress for your blog :), it’s time to actually install WordPress in your new hosting account on your new domain name.  It’s like building your house on your new lot at your new address!

You can sign up here to use one of Siteground’s very inexpensive hosting plans.  Don’t worry about getting the installation of WordPress done inside Siteground.  It’s super easy and they will walk you through the entire process as soon as you purchase your hosting.  Easy Peasy!

5.  Choose a theme.

Once you’ve got everything installed, it’s time to choose a theme for your blog.  This is like decorating your house!  There are tons of free themes inside of WordPress and for now, just choose one that you like the looks of.  You can always change it out later.

6.  Customize your blog and start blogging!

Customizing your blog gets done inside the theme you chose.  Even though the theme is your “decoration”, you still need to add some stuff to really make it your own customized blog.  Once you’re done with that, it’s time to start adding your content.  Your content can consist of pages and/or posts or both.  The actual purpose of your blog will determine what type of content you have.  We’ll talk more about that later.

So that’s it’!  You’re ready to go.

You’ve successfully made it through this short 6 step tutorial on how to start a blog to make money.  But I know you’re thinking it sounds complicated, right?

Honestly, it’s pretty simple.  The above steps I gave are definitely all the steps needed in order to actually get a blog online and start blogging.  But if you want to successfully add the “make money” part of the equation to your blog, you’ll need to get some blogging know-how under your belt in order to make that happen.
